This course follows very closely the life of the coppice worker and charcoal burner. Modern steel charcoal kilns have meant that although the burn cycle must still be closely monitored there is time to get on with a few other craft items.
Over the three days we will load, fire and unload a charcoal kiln. By closely studying the critical times during this cycle and checking the kiln on a regular basis (including by moonlight) we will discover the optimum time for shutting down the burn leaving greatest amount of product possible behind.
In between we are going to make a range of other products such as gate hurdles, rakes and forks and more, depending on the time available.
NB Unloading the charcoal kiln is a really messy business and we strongly recommend you bring very old clothes or overalls. We will provide face masks. |
