Nick Ward

Nick has had a lifetime connection with both Natural History and the outdoors and has specialist knowledge in trees, woodlands and wildlife. A rare and original character, he has great empathy with people and a genuine desire to accumulate and pass on knowledge.

Throughout his young life Nick spent every available moment in the woods and fields of Sussex studying the rich array of plants, trees and animals to be found there. Upon leaving school Nick found employment in the forestry and woodland management department of the local estate. Here began a traditional countryside education that is rarely to be found theses days, as the few lucky ones to be taught by “the old boys” would agree. Part of a small team responsible for their own beat they would carry out all the maintenance of the forest from re planting to felling and converting timber. .

At this time Nick also became heavily involved in deer and wildlife management as a vital part of the forest management system.

Nick later went on to study a three-year course in arboriculture at Merrist Wood College and when not working for Woodcraft School operates his own business offering arboriculture and woodland management where his services are in great demand. His patience, good humour and integrity are well known and coupled with his extremely high ability as a naturalist makes him an asset to both Woodcraft School and its clients. We feel very proud and privileged to have him on board as a full instructor.
