Set in the beautiful and unspoiled region of the West Coast of Scotland, the expedition will take you through breathtaking scenery with some excellent wild camps on white sandy beaches. The route will give you views of one of Scotland’s most recognisable mountains- Suilven. It is Red Deer country, as well as being home to Osprey, Golden Eagles and Otters and during the week we will be tying to get you as close to these animals as possible.

The expedition will involve a paddle into the heart of Loch Veyatie, a chance to ascend Suilven, an exploration of Fionn Loch and a paddle back out taking in some of the most breath taking scenery in Scotland- this is a true wilderness experience.

Throughout the trip you will have the accompaniment of two very experienced and knowledgeable guest instructors and head instructor John Rhyder. We offer free fly fishing tuition and the use of fly rods which will be available on most days of the journey.

Canoeing distance would be a maximum of 35km which would be covered over five full days. We will be carrying all our food and equipment with us as we plan to be self sufficient for the whole time. There will be forgaing for wild food along the way to supplement travel rations and at night you will be sleeping under tarps or small tents. A brief summary of the activities you will be undertaking on the way will be:

  • coastal and seashore foraging
  • flyfishing and other fishing techniques
  • portage and packing
  • sailing in your canoe
  • wildlife watching using camouflage hides
  • stalking and tracking

Itinerary

Day 1- Meet at Ullapool 4pm at your hostel accommodation for the night. There will be a trip brief and introduction followed by a meal while we all get to know each other. Evening prep for the expedition ahead.

Day 2- Early start to be transferred by bus to Elphin, the beginning of your journey. We paddle this river for a short while into Cam Loch which is about 3km long. From here we head West and portage a big waterfall into Loch Veyatie. We will paddle about 7km in total that day and will spend some time looking at the skills we will need for the trip, also plenty of time for stopping, looking and fishing.

Day 3- Continue our paddle through Loch Veyatie into a short river (Uidh Fhearna) which flows into Fionn Loch. You will have some of the most impressive and spectacular views of Suilven going this way. We will have a chance to explore Fionn Loch and spend time doing some wildlife watching/ fishing/ tracking (7km paddle)

Day 4- Ascend Suilven. A fairly challenging day but the views will definitely be worth it! Lots of wildlife have been seen on previous ascents including red deer and grouse. (4km walk in total- ascend 600 meters on 2km)

Day 5- Portage from Fionn Loch into Loch Sionascaig. The portage is for about 1 1/2 km and will bring us into once again stunning views of the surrounding landscape. We are in the heart of the Inverpolly National Nature Reserve and stand a good chance of spotting red deer, osprey, golden eagles and otters. We can spend some time exploring this area by open canoe and again this is also a really good chance to do lots of wildlife watching/fishing etc.

Day 6- Paddle through Loch Sionasgaig, a short portage into Loch Buine Moire where we link with the road and finish our journey. (4km paddle) Evening is spent with farewell meal and accommodation in a remote spectacular private location.

Day 7- A hearty breakfast followed by an early transfer to Ullapool or Inverness.
