Trailing

Trailing is art and science of locating animals using their tracks and sign to follow and encounter them. Trailing animals leads to an intimate connection firstly with the creature being followed, and secondly with the environment that animal travels through. There is something very special to be gained from following another living creature. Discovering where it fed, slept, sped up or slowed down sometimes just minutes before. if all goes well getting a good view of it while it remains unaware of your presence.

The programme covers the techniques needed to trail or follow an animal in the wild. The learning outcomes therefore follow the assessment criteria of the evaluation covering in detail the elements of spoor recognition, spoor anticipation, anticipation of dangerous situations, alertness and stealth with each of these main headings further broken down into sub categories leading to what we we believe is a most in-depth and thorough trailing criteria.

We prefer to teach trailing in a realistic scenario and so after a fairly brief introduction the course will take place entirely on the trail. We tend to focus on ungulates which are usually deer, to maximise our chances of trailing to a satisfactory conclusion.

We are not working from our usual site for our tracking and trailing evaluations and so do not normally offer camping. Please contact us if you would like to discuss options.

About CyberTracker

Cybertracker is a two part tracking evaluation system developed in South Africa by Louis Liebenberg. Since its conception it has spread to America and in 2012, Europe. Due to its effectiveness as a fair and representative measure of tracking ability it is also a superb educational tool. It is divided into two areas, track and sign identification and trailing (or following wildlife using track and sign and knowledge of animal behaviour). The ultimate goal is encountering the animal. These two elements are further broken down into standard and specialist levels, we are hosting both standard track and sign and standard trailing evaluations, we will also on occasion host specialist track and sign evaluations in rotation with other host companies in Europe.

Why Cyber?

For anyone wondering about the cyber aspect of cybertracker, this refers to a data capture programme developed by Louis Liebenberg to allow information on animal populations to be recorded by trackers in the field. It is available for free on the cyberTracker website but does not form any part of the evaluations.

Catering

All of these workshops/evaluations are self catered and camping is not offered although there is a very reasonably priced camping option here 

Details

These programmes are run and evaluated by John Rhyder who is certified as a senior tracker having scored 100% in both track and sign and trailing in specialist evaluations. This is the highest assessed level possible in the CyberTracker system. John is also an evaluator for the CyberTracker system in both track and sign and trailing and acts as the External evaluator for track and sign in Europe.

Fees

The cost of a wildlife trailing workshop/evaluation is £700 per person with a maximum of 4 participants on the programme.
