Course content

This one day programme covers the identification of the common fungi families, edible and medicinal fungi. We start studying a range of fungi collected previously to get to grips with the main identification features of the families most frequently encountered. The focus is on the most useful in terms of food, medicine and utility but we will also study those that are potentially poisonous and point out the key identification points. We will discuss the relationships fungi have with trees and the ecology of these fascination organisms in general.

After this introduction we will take a gentle walk to identify and collect specimens from the wild and bring some back to base camp to cook up and experiment with some specimens that have been preserved in a variety of ways comparing textures and flavours with the fresh specimens.

Other plants and trees that offer, in particular wild food, possibilities will also be pointed out and discussed. we hope there will be enough fungi gathered that some may be taken home but this varies year to year and we cannot guarantee this.
