Mentoring in Wildlife Tracking
I’ve been tracking and teaching for a long time. Before I did it professionally, wildlife and nature were already my passion, especially tracking, which I believe pulls everything together. I’ve found that when people want to improve, it is not always another course or more information they need. Instead, the best approach is to look at their current practice and strengthen it by filling in the gaps.
Often the key to improvement can be found in being watched and asked awkward questions! Alongside suggesting alternative and pointing what is missing and also what is missed.
My mentoring is about this approach, it’s not a course or a set syllabus because it looks at the individual and works from there.
In this regard it doesn’t really work for beginners and is aimed at people with some experience with a need to improve.
Who it’s for
This is for people who already track and want to get better in a real sense.
It suits you if:
- You are practicing regularly and can put my advice into actions
- You are happy to work on feedback which I strive to make useful and honest
- You are interested in finding animals and learning about animals, not only footprints.
- You want your tracking to stand up in difficult conditions
What we work on
That depends on you, but commonly it includes:
- Reading sign when it isn’t obvious
- Deciding what matters and what doesn’t
- Understanding why animals move the way they do
- Noticing your own disturbance
- Moving through the landscape with less impact
- Knowing when a trail is not followable, and when stopping is the right call!
A great tracker can follow any animal across any terrain? That’s a myth…..
Real tracking is about judgment, understanding limits, reading conditions, and accepting when the ground stops telling a reliable story.
How it works
This mentoring can be
- Field days or sessions focused just on mentoring, either one-to-one or in small groups
- Scheduled online or phone calls for ongoing support
- Helping with id and advice from your images and video
- Guidance tailored to your development, helping you focus between sessions
