Overview

This tracking workshop combines training and evaluation, beginning with a three-day programme focused on general track and sign before moving into a two-day CyberTracker evaluation. The training and evaluation are delivered as separate disciplines. While the evaluation is an independent assessment of tracking ability, it is also very much part of the learning process, offering valuable insights and feedback that build on the workshop itself.

Course Content

The track and sign element of the course focuses on recognising the marks and traces left by mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and, on occasion, insects. Participants will study foot morphology and the identification of tracks, feeding signs, droppings, beds and resting areas, as well as skulls, bones and feathers. The course blends classroom theory with practical fieldwork, taking place across several venues in order to encounter as many species as possible.

The evaluation takes place at a different location from the training. This is to avoid  being assessed on the exact material covered during the workshop. However, a track and sign evaluation is an excellent learning experience in its own right and should be regarded as a continuation of the training, reinforcing knowledge and developing practical tracking skills.

Details of the evaluation process can be found here.

Details

These programmes are run and evaluated by John Rhyder who is certified as a senior tracker having scored 100% in both track and sign and trailing in specialist evaluations. This is the highest assessed level possible in the CyberTracker system. COURSE REVIEWS

What a fantastic workshop and evaluation this is! The combination of theory and practical work gave the course structure and provided something for everyone, irrespective of their knowledge and previous experience. John is an excellent teacher, supportive, relaxed and knowledgeable. I learned so much, not only about track and sign, but also about Cybertracker, its history and evolution. John shared his collections of animal feet, casts of tracks, scat, feathers and bones and many stories about his experiences with evaluations and tracking in other parts of the world.

Michelle Pinard

Seriously one of the best workshops and evaluations I have ever been on! Not only did I learn so much, but John’s witty humor and engaging teaching style made the experience thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommend John as an expert guide and educator. Thanks for sharing your expertise, John! It was an awesome week!

Jennifer Draime

I really loved the detail and time taken to discuss all the track and sign we found and especially hearing the thought process behind ascertaining what everything was. The evaluation process was also such a great learning tool. I was worried it would just be about testing knowledge and not about a continuation of learning. The whole experience was wonderful  and added to by the enjoyment of camping up at the woodland camp with others on the course.

Rosemary Thomas

Many many thanks for a superb learning experience. I found last week very demanding but also absolutely fascinating. It raised my tracking skills to a whole new level. It was a bonus to scrape level1 especially as I made several mystifying decisions! Your course has actually increased my enthusiasm for learning more so I shall keep my eye for further courses.

The Track and Sign workshop and Evaluation course. Another top course from the Woodcraft School. It shows how good they are by the number of people who like me were returning students. John and David were great teachers with loads of knowledge and experience. The whole Cyber tracker set up is straight forward and the amount of stuff you learn is amazing, definitely worth every penny.

Combined Trailing Workshop & Evaluation

Overview

Trailing is the art and science of locating animals by reading their tracks, interpreting their behaviour, and following the subtle signs they leave behind. It creates an intimate connection with both the creature being tracked and the landscape it inhabits. Each trail tells a story — where an animal has fed, rested, quickened its pace, or paused, sometimes only moments before. When all goes well, the process leads to a close and unforgettable encounter, with the animal unaware of your presence.

This programme is designed to immerse students in that experience, combining practical fieldcraft with behavioural interpretation. By learning to trail, participants gain not only the ability to locate and follow wild animals but also a deeper awareness of wildlife and the environments through which they move. The course consists of three days of intensive training, followed by a two-day evaluation under the CyberTracker system, recognised internationally as the global standard for tracking and trailing evaluation.

Course Content

During the training phase, students are introduced to the full range of techniques needed to trail animals successfully in the wild. Teaching follows the CyberTracker framework, covering spoor recognition, anticipation of spoor, interpretation of behaviour, anticipation of movement, and awareness of potential dangers. These are supported by the cultivation of alertness and stealth, with each area broken down into detailed subcategories that together form one of the most comprehensive trailing systems available. The training is delivered almost entirely in the field, with students learning in realistic scenarios and spending most of their time actively following trails.

The evaluation phase takes place over two days, students are assessed on their ability to apply skills in real-world conditions, demonstrating accuracy in reading and following tracks, interpreting animal behaviour, anticipating movement, and maintaining safe and respectful practice. The CyberTracker qualification is widely recognised as the global standard in trailing and provides an internationally respected measure of ability.

To maximise the chances of reaching meaningful conclusions this programme and the valuation is limited to 4 people. The focuses is often on ungulates such as deer, whose behaviour and habitats offer excellent opportunities to practise and refine trailing skills. By the end of the programme, participants will have experienced both guided learning and rigorous assessment, ensuring their abilities are tested and recognised to the highest level.

Wildlife Tracking Bulgaria

Overview

The Rhodope Mountains is one of Europe’s wildest regions and sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, a unique meeting point of habitats and species. With low human population density, the area remains a stronghold for wildlife such as bears, wolves, golden jackals and wildcats. You may also spot lynx, marten, otter, wild boar, chamois, mouflon and three species of deer. Overhead, griffon vultures wheel above the cliffs, joined in summer by Egyptian vultures, golden and booted eagles, and a host of other spectacular birds. There is even a chance of seeing the rare Black vulture. Reptiles and amphibians are also well represented, including lizards, snakes, and tortoises.

This is an immersive, hands-on tracking adventure led by senior tracker John Rhyder. Our focus during this trip is to get to know animals using their tracks and signs — and, where possible, to encounter them in person! The number of participants is limited to ten, allowing us to travel as a small group and maximise opportunities for learning and wildlife encounters.

Course Content

You will learn to identify and interpret the clues that wildlife leaves behind: tracks, gaits, feeding signs, droppings, and other subtle traces. We combine this skill-building with wildlife watching, seeking out species that call the Rhodopes home.

A ‘typical’ day may start early, heading out on foot into the forest to look for fresh sign when animals are most active. Some days we may depart before breakfast for a couple of hours of tracking, returning for a meal and a relaxed mid-morning break. Afternoons may involve exploring new habitats, travelling by vehicle to reach promising areas, or focusing on birds and other smaller wildlife.

Accommodation

We will stay in comfortable, local (award winning) accommodation enjoying warm hospitality and traditional Bulgarian cuisine. You will not go hungry! Breakfast, packed lunches and evening meals are provided.

We have planned to visit two slightly different venues- the first is close to a beautiful river valley and the second is a lodge set in a private hunting reserve and is home to both bears and wolves:

  • The first venue has only 4 options for single rooms so please let us know at booking if you would like one. There will be an additional charge for this.
  • The second venue has more scope for rooms and it is possible for everyone to have a single room at no extra charge.

Itinerary

  • April 21 arrive and travel to our first venue in the Eastern Rhodope mountains or first location.
  • April 24 travel to our second venue in the Western Rhodope mountains via the Devils River Canyon
  • April 27 travel to Plovdiv for our final evening before departing for the airport on 28 April.

NB we have arranged for a hotel for the last night but the evening meal on the 27th and breakfast on the 28th is not included. There is much to choose from in the old roman town of Plovdiv and its a wonderful place to explore with a huge variety of restaurants and bars to choose from.

Dates

21–28 April 2026

Getting There
We provide pick-up and drop-off from Plovdiv. For UK travellers, there is a weekly direct flight from Luton to Plovdiv that fits our schedule. Travel days are 21st April (arrival) and 28th April (departure).

Introduction To Human Tracking

Overview

When tracking people, you know intuitively how your quarry moves, behaves, and makes decisions because you are the same species. Using this innate knowledge on the trail gives you a huge advantage.

This course uses human tracking as a training ground to develop core trailing skills. Tracking humans provides a clear, accessible way to train the core skills of trailing: observation, interpretation, anticipation, and problem-solving, without the added complexity of subtle or unfamiliar animal behaviour.

Highly experienced trackers, John Rhyder and Stani Groeneweg, train you in essential tracking methods as used by military units, law enforcement, and counter-poaching rangers. The procedures are stripped back to their fundamentals, focusing on practical skills required to stay on a trail and methods for overcoming common tracking problems, such as re-locating a lost trail.

This course blends immersive fieldwork and guided practice so that participants become confident maintaining continuity on the trail across varied landscapes and substrates.

Tracking humans sharpens observational skills, as humans are another form of animal to follow. This awareness improves a tracker’s ability to read all types of terrain and species. Some may join the course to broaden their general tracking abilities, while others might use it as preparation for tracking elusive soft footed animals. Regardless of motivation, the course provides a practical foundation in human tracking.

Course Content

The Human tracking course develops the tracker’s mindset, ethical awareness, and disciplined observation skills that underpin all successful trailing. You then learn how to locate the first sign of passage, recognise different types of sign, and clearly distinguish human tracks from animal movement. Building on this, you develop the ability to interpret tracks, understanding their age, direction of travel, pace, and how substrate affects them. All while also reading individual versus group movement and identifying changes in behaviour through sign.

With this understanding, you practise step-by-step trailing techniques as used by professional man-trackers, learning to establish direction, stay on the trail, and recover it when sign becomes faint or lost. At the same time, you develop anticipation and awareness, using landscape features, terrain logic, and human behavioural patterns to predict movement and solve tracking problems ahead of time, these skills transfer directly to animal tracking.

These abilities are then applied in practical ways, from outdoor education to fostering ecological awareness, and serve as a powerful training ground for following more subtle animal trails under challenging conditions. Finally, all of these skills come together in hands-on exercises in varied environments, where you work individually and in teams to locate, follow, and interpret trails, building confidence, accuracy, and resilience as a tracker.

This course offers value to anyone curious about the natural world. Aspiring and experienced trackers alike will gain practical, problem-solving skills, while wildlife professionals, educators, park rangers, and guides can deepen their understanding of landscapes. It also benefits search-and-rescue, military, and conservation personnel, as well as outdoor leaders seeking sharper awareness. Ultimately, it provides a solid, transferable foundation for tracking both humans and animals.

Fees

The cost of this course is £480.

CyberTracker Certification

Overview

CyberTracker evaluations offer a unique opportunity to explore the art and science of wildlife tracking. These practical, field-based assessments are designed to encourage open dialogue, careful observation, and genuine learning in a supportive environment. Open to anyone with an interest in nature, they provide a valuable experience whether you are just starting out or already have experience in tracking. Successful participants who achieve the required standard receive internationally recognised certification.

Course Content

Standard Track & Sign Evaluation

This two-day programme introduces participants to the full range of animal tracks and signs, from the obvious to the obscure. Guided by an experienced evaluator, you will spend time in the field identifying and interpreting evidence of wildlife presence, engaging in discussion to explore reasoning and deepen understanding. The process is as much about learning as it is about assessment. Those who reach a score of 70% or above will be awarded a formal CyberTracker certificate, a recognised standard of tracking skill.

To get a feel for how a track and sign evaluation works check out this video

One-Day Track & Sign Evaluation

For those looking for a shorter introduction, the one-day evaluation provides a hands-on experience in a workshop style. With fewer questions than the full two-day event, it is an accessible first step into the CyberTracker system while still offering a rigorous and supportive learning environment. Achieving 70% or higher grants a Level I Track & Sign certificate, the highest level available in this shorter format.

Trailing Evaluation

The Trailing Evaluation focuses on the ability to follow and interpret the trail of an animal. Over the course of the assessment, you will be asked to track across a variety of terrains, interpret behavioural clues, and work towards encountering the animal without disturbing it. The species involved vary depending on location and conditions. This evaluation is particularly demanding, combining technical skill with patience and field awareness.

Details of the evaluation criteria can be found here.

About CyberTracker

CyberTracker is a two-part evaluation system developed in South Africa by Louis Liebenberg, now used worldwide. It covers track & sign identification and trailing—following wildlife or people through tracks, signs, and behaviour. The combination of these two elements is tracking: identifying, interpreting, following, and ultimately finding. Evaluations run at standard and specialist levels; We deliver both standard and specialist evaluations.

Why Cyber?

The word “Cyber” comes from the data collection software also created by Liebenberg, which allows wildlife observations to be recorded digitally in the field. Please note that this software is separate from the evaluation process described here.

Catering

All these evaluations are self catered and non residential.

About the Evaluator

These evaluations are led by John Rhyder, a Senior Tracker having achieved 100% in specialist evaluations in both Track & Sign and Trailing.  He is an evaluator in both disciplines and brings years of experience in tracking, wildlife, natural history and teaching.

Fees

Track & Sign Evaluation (two days): £220 per person (maximum of 10 participants)
One-Day Track & Sign Evaluation: £90 per person (maximum of 12 participants)
Trailing Evaluation: £275 per person (maximum of 4 participants)

Hosting an Evaluation

CyberTracker evaluations can be arranged at venues across the UK and Europe. Please contact us if you’d like to bring an evaluation to your location.

COURSE REVIEWS

So happy to have achieved level 3 in this weekend’s track and sign CyberTracker evaluation. Thanks to the amazing training by John Rhyder some intense studying and more than one moment of muttering to myself I got through the weekend. Such a great learning experience and good excuse to walk through beautiful landscapes. Thanks everyone, especially John for his patience on courses and wizard level knowledge.

Dale Mortiboys

The assessment methodology used by the Cybertracker model is one of the best that I have experienced. Yes, it can be tough at times, but with the graded levels of attainment it gives a fair and accurate reflection of your current abilities in recognising track and sign or trailing. The added bonus is that unlike most other assessment models, there is the opportunity to continually learn throughout. This is both through recognizing new track and sign not encountered before and reinforcing existing learning and understanding. It is like an assessment while being taught!

Darryl Peters

Had a great couple of days up in East Lothian for the first CyberTracker in Scotland, with a great bunch of people and a great bunch of track and sign! A big thanks to Dave Crosbie and Dan Puplett for hosting and organising the event and a huge thanks to John Rhyder for finding some fantastic track and sign in some seriously adverse conditions- a real testement to your skills as an evaluator. Roll on next time.

Rob Brumfitt

This is a Great course, I can’t recommend it enough, if you have an interest (even slightly) in track and sign, just go along, it’s a cheap learning experience for the subject and helps you get your eye in, each course has students of all levels of experience, so no intimidation, I personally used this as a workshop rather than “I want to pass” and so, did not expect anything in return, but with two full days of track and sign this course is a great way to learn and embed the subject. If your thinking about it, just book it.

Paul Workman

Embarking on the journey of trailing through Cybertracker at Woodcraft School has been a massively enriching experience. What makes this valuable to me is the structure and delivery style. Whilst the subject definitely requires lifetime investment and commitment in regards to leaning, improving and becoming proficient, the whole set up offers you the foundation to do this regardless of where your skill set is initially. Whilst laid back, enjoyable and fun, which serves anyone who just wants to trail for leisure, there is still the high level of professional influence and support that makes you value the nature of the 2 day trailing evaluation. This definitely enables you to feel confident that through ongoing learning and investment in a very absorbing and addictive subject matter this can also benefit anyone seriously thinking about teaching or instructing further down the line.

Ian Gosling

The course/ assessment, in my opinion, was first class. The technical balance of questions was really good, and the explanations of the detail was clear and easy to follow. While I scored slightly lower than my previous result, I felt that it was an accurate reflection of where I am currently with my knowledge and skill within the Cybetracker sphere. Again, I have left the course with a sense of frustration of how much there is to know and a sense of pleasure at gaining wildlife information, while is never likely to come up in a pub quiz, it certainly going to open up my view of the natural world. What Cybertracker encompasses for me is the sense that there is always more and the journey never ends.

Richard Law

Just a quick email to say a massive thanks for the last two days of Cybertracking!! I really enjoyed it! And feel like I learnt loads. A massive thanks again to for getting me started in the first place.

Dawn Doughty

The quality of our small group was marked not by age but experience in the field, with others being much more proficient than myself; however this did not detract from the experience but enhanced it. Feedback was given in an informal setting in the local hostelry over a well-earned pint (lemonade for me I had a six hour drive ahead) and was both accurate and insightful with many pointers to improve and practice when I got back home. It was at times painful, frustrating and lays you completely vulnerable to your own insecurities but it is also honest. I had a good idea of my capabilities before I left home but this process tells you exactly where you are at (in a kind and supportive way, thanks Nate).

David Adams

In the past, when I’ve spent time in the woods, I’ve followed the odd deer trail for 100m or so over easy terrain and then as soon as I’d lost the track I’d lose interest and not attempt to question it more or look for the final details. It wasn’t really important to me to find it. After the evaluation, and seeing how its possible to pick up the tiniest of details and start to get an insight into the individual animal that left the track, I am well and truly hooked! Both John and Nate (from Cybertrack) taught me some great skills and methodology that I want to put into practice on a regular basis.

Angie Nash

What I love about the Cybertracker system is that you come away with so much more knowledge than what you started the evaluation with. It may seem a bit pricey for an evaluation but you get just as much out of it as you would a training course, and you come away with a clear idea of your strengths and weaknesses and what you can do to improve. I would highly recommend any of the Cybertracker training and evaluations to anyone wanting learn more about our wildlife and to anyone teaching outdoors skills.

Elayna Shenshone

After the course is over you are left with a lot to process, again this is a good thing as you end up with a choice, either to carry on or stay with where you are, and this will depend on what you wish to achieve with your tracking. The evaluation left me with wanting more for several reasons, one of which was to connect with other instructors as well as the group as a whole, for me this is as important as the course itself. Now it is up to me to go out and build on what I know, ready for the next evaluation.

Geoffrey McMullan
